Yahtzee at 10:20 ish "The edited video without the chance for the camera to slew to the steely eyed glare of the unimpressed" Yahtzee at 3:30 ish "The cameras only ever look so far, they only show the screaming fanbois in the front rows, never going back so far as to show the unimpressed press". However, well done on just enjoying yourselves arguing the toss on a silly subject.

This is a good compromise. I like to access the Escapist podcasts on Youtube since I generally do that, and splitting the videos works better to keep good views on the part of the video more people watch.

Good. I recommended something like this on the community page. Youtube works like that, if a person sees half an hour of a two hour video that shows, somehow, less interest than seeing five minutes of a five minute video.

Content creator of the year, isn't important. Especially since, from who Yahtzee said won, Shroud is just the CSGO version of Fortnight player Ninja. So it's just a load of battle royal players or let's players such as Markiplier, Jacksepticeye or any other gameplay streamer you can think of. Ultimately irrelevant except as advertisment.

I mean, the concept of gathering for a communal experience of common purpose is always going to be relevant, whether people on the outside like them or not. They're a fundamental expression of human instincts for community, and have many utilities along those lines. Centralized information dissemination being a good one to mention that has relevance to those on the outside. Having one event a year as the target window for industry operators creates a kind of order to news delivery. For many, keeping tabs throughout the year on so many sources of information just to be keep in the loop is just too big an ask. But centralizing to an extent, allows for both the industry and consumers to focus attention. It's pretty nice to just wait for E3 and get a large chunk of the years news down at once. Since E3 started losing popularity with both big and small companies there have been way more games I might have been interested in that flew completely under my radar. I just don't have the time or energy to go chasing around these companies and their individual little shows/events, and I think I'm not alone in that. Centralization was, in a sense, a quality of life fix for people like me.

I think have a time is relevant, not necessarily the show itself. Without E3 this year, everyone did online conferences and shows whenever they wanted, and it all just lost some of its hype. I’m pretty sure I missed a couple, because I didn’t know they were happening. I know viewership was down, at least initially. Maybe they got more views over time. But without one big collaborative time for everyone to watch, with it spread out over months, it wasn’t all that fun.

I don't even need to watch the video to give my answer: As someone who attended E3 from 2002 as press til last year, the answer is a big fat NO. I'm not going to get into all the reasons, but the #1 reason is The Internet. #2 is ESA has no idea on how to run a convention. As press from a moderate sized site, there was no reason for me to go, oh, around 2015 or so -- and there was less and less each year. The only reason since 2015 was attending the Microsoft/Sony/Bethesda/Ubisoft/PC Gaming Show (of recent years) in person -- and no other reason.

I think you guys should talk more about what events like E3 mean for *smaller* developers. I'm seeing a lot of emphasis on the big corporations and sure enough big corporations don't necessarily need E3. But for something like an indie developer it can be an opportunity for exposure that they wouldn't otherwise get. Basically, if somebody like Nintendo puts out a direct video then of course people are going to watch it. They already have an established fan base. But if an indie developer does who knows if anyone will even tune in for it.

28 dager siden
Grifo

Well, the smaller devs suffer from the price of having a small booth is quite expensive, just google why Devolver Digital avoided being on E3 for a while by renting the parking space outside the venue for a few years, before they started doing their Nintendo direct like presentations (Which are glorious in their absurdity) . It was all basically a response to how expensive E3 was for them.

Just casually drops a "fuck Trump" without even a thought about how a decent portion of "gAmERs" are racist shitheads and he could probably get more revenue by censoring himself. long story short; No. it isn't longer version; it really has stopped being about the games and more about who can put on the most extravagant showing to amass artificial hype. remember when Bethesda had Andrew WK perform one song to lead into Rage 2 trailer? and then Rage 2 turned out to be a real bore of a game once it released? how about the time Ubisoft showed a fake trailer for Watch_Dogs that made the game look so much better then it ended up on launch? not that its due only because E3, E3 played a big part because Ubisoft needed to get people to want Watch_Dogs and who would want to play a game that looks so bland?

28 dager siden
Metronic Magician
Metronic Magician

I feel like there’s a part of E3 that very much is relevant, but it’s not the stuff the rest of the world sees of E3. The part that matters is the convention aspect of it where a bunch of game devs set up booths to show off their games to the masses of games media. It’s a needed light shown on the small games, and gives a community vibe to the games industry. That said the big events like the Xbox, Sony, EA, Bethesda, and Ubisoft don’t really matter or are needed. At best it’s just a highly curated hype event that has enough fanboys in the crowd to keep the cheers going while every game gets shown, and at worst it makes major game devs force out a trailer to a game that nots coming out any time soon so that games media can have a bone to chew on for the next few months. The problem is the only things the rest of the world sees of E3 is this latter material. Either because not many media outlets actually give time to the showroom floor during their coverage of E3, or because all of the big events drown out the small stuff when people look back onto it in articles, opinion pieces, etc. Originally these major events had a purpose since there wasn’t a way to directly give the consumers this information. Now that direct line exists so that reason for happening isn’t there any more.

In my view no. It's mainly due to streaming, it lost it exclusivity and in turns its glamour! Any 80's or 90's kids reading this comment knows that we only know about it and the upcoming games from reading about it and seeing the photos from the gaming magazine! Even rarer was seeing clip of it from a video game show or have an E3 highlight video in a dvd freebie in the magazine! That in turns only get up to hype up into wanting to go, letting our imagination running about wondering what E3 is like! I mean at least with Comic-Con, they still operate as a con as in having the many many shops selling their stuff!

My biggest issue with Jack's argument (and yes I know that lart was Scripted) is that he dragged "All Conventions" into this, and called them "Echo Chambers" Speaking as someone who dearly misses Convention Season since 2020 went and did the whole 2020 thing, I say it's a Good thing to be surrounded by Like-Minded Individuals! Or even Individuals who Disagree with you but are There in person and can have a Proper conversation about it! In this day'n'age of Social Media turning every Disagreement, no matter how small the topic may be, into a Shouting Match and repeating the same thoughts over and over across multiple accounts, basically creating a Reverse Eco Chamber for anyone who Disagrees with you. I say the In-Person Experience has never been More Important!

@isodoublet These days "gaming" is the most popular form of entertainment, so a fellow gamer doesn't mean much. It's like if you came across a guy that also drives a car. But what if both of you like sports cars specifically Ferraris, similarly people who go to gaming conventions are probably looking for their specific niche. BTW I've never been to a convention of any kind, I just found what you said odd and felt the need to reply.

27 dager siden
isodoublet

@Demon Eyes If anything, videogames might make it easier I think. When I go to trade conferences and I'm expected to talk to people just because they're there and happen to work on a similar field as myself, it just makes me want to die. "You can't possibly have friends but not want to talk about the things you like with them. " Perhaps I wasn't clear. It's fine to talk to friends about a mutual interest. But I have very little basis for a friendship with most people who call themselves 'gamers' -- we just have similar entertainment choices. If it works out easier for you, power to you. No judgement.

@isodoublet There are conventions for just about anything a person has an interest in, not just videogames. You can't possibly have friends but not want to talk about the things you like with them. Perhaps you were fortunate enough to have such people within reach, most people don't.

Respectfully I disagree. Overseas PAX is known but not talked about. This Australian didnt know Quakecon existed until you said it. E3 is almost as much as an event as a Marvel film and that happens because E3 is a press show that fans can see. Never would have bought hollow knight without E3 and that's a game made in my home country.
