It took an hour and forty-five minutes for a scary monster. This is like that great book you must read, but it only gets good around chapter five. From this stream in looks like: Walking Simulator-Historic Pub Crawl. In a mostly empty village. Walk somewhere, fall down, repeat. Listen to people babble about their vacation. Fall down. Visit a cave and fall down. Take Instagram photos with the pencil sketch on. Fall down. Then wake up with no memory and you're pregnant. Fall down

Sanity was purely cosmetic it had absolutely 0 gameplay effect. They felt that the fear of consequences was more important than having a concrete consequences therefore were very vague with explaining exactly what it was supposed to affect. They lie in one of the hints that the monsters would see you more easily but they never coded that. This was said in an interview by frictional games.

@Travis Clark II No need for name calling. I know he did, but he did via EXTREME popular request and since he was grabbed by the tag of phycological horror. Although Yahtzees love of story driven games, I just don’t think it’s his type of game nor story. Anyway, I never said it was a bad game, just not a game to be reviewed on zero punctuation or anything.

@Elijah Cheetham I didn't realize you were a Fortnite kid. And Yahtzee actually did review Doki Doki.

@Travis Clark II I played it all the way through, and only has a smidge more gameplay then doki doki, but it ain’t nothing more then a visual novel compared to games like ace attorney or danganronpa. The story is good and so is the music, but it’s a meh from me chief on everything else.

@Elijah Cheetham He should, and its a little more than a visual novel.

I imagine this game is much like the last one. There really is only rarely an actual threat. The game tricks you into believing something is going to happen and makes you the central problem. In the original game your sanity falling didn't cause.. anything. Just hallucinations and aesthetic changes. The devs even said the "monsters notice you easier" tooltip was misdirection. With how this game functions, I'd expect it's the exact same.

@EspressoStreams There's a certain art to it. It reminds me of how the best of the Telltale games got the Player to feel their choices matter, even when they don't, in the same way a lot of these games (try to) get the Player to feel like they're in danger, even when they're not. A lot of the troubles comes with taking the haunted house tour and knowing precisely when you're about to be in trouble and when you're not. And then doubly so if during the "in danger" part, you learn somehow that you're not really even in all that much danger. Where Rebirth fails and succeeds I haven't quite decided yet. And how it stacks up to Descent, I'm not sure. I do think TDD was masterful at the first half, and adding Hard Mode really puts the screws on wrt the second half.. But you're right in that Rebirth falls into the same basic formula as all the others -- The Dark Descent, the Penumbra games, SOMA, and A Machine For Pigs. Its only radical departure is, I think, how its story is presented, and how well/poorly each system is integrated (or left by the wayside, as it seems Health Management was).

@Ricky Jaeger I'll admit I played through TDD's normal mode and never touched it again because I'm worse than a four year old in a dark room. I just think it's interesting how most of the actual threat in TDD came from the player perception moreso than the game itself, and how well they pulled that off. This game it didn't seem to be the same kind of atmosphere, but the devs wanted it to be the same sort of unease. I finished watching through this one, and I guess it has its' moments, but I just can't say that it's even close to what the original Amnesia was. I wasn't as interested in the lore at all, I didn't care as much about the characters, and the big story-changing decisions don't feel like they have the same amount of gravity to me. TDD was really one of a kind in its scope, but there's only so many times the "stop scaring yourself" trope works from one company before it becomes expected and boring.

In TDD's Hard mode, losing all sanity _is_ a game over, but it's not in Normal mode, yes.

To be fair, lots of modern AAA games run on a modified version of the Quake Engine or the Unreal Engine or the original idTech Engine. Same with XWhateveritwascalled/Gamebryo/Creation Engine. The only reason the latter is getting shat on and not the other ones is because it hasn't been modernised to the same high quality standards as the other ones; otherwise it's not uncommon to use modified versions of 20+ year old game engines as a base platform.

Machine for pigs was partly designed by a game design lecturer at my uni in the UK. Remarkably it doesn't have the "ooh be scared" thing and actually relies on being within a huge machine and some love craft horror. You can read his thesis and papers on the design online about the process and why its the way it is of people are curious enough to read. Google *Pete Howell and *Machine For Pigs Youve played and reviewed it already BUT I feel its worth saying as this 3rd installment and the first are so different they could be different games. At least to me anyway but we all have our opinions :)
