I'm not enthusiastic for the giant corporation that ruined Fallout to become a part of an even more giant corporation. On the bright side, there's a faint glimmer of hope that since Obsidian is also owned by microsoft, they'll give them the reigns of another fallout game. Maybe they'll even get Chris Avelone and Josh Sawyer to come back and give us New Vegas 2. None of that will happen but it's nice to fantasize.

25:25 How is it "debatable"? It is a subscription - it's quite literally what it does, removes actual ownership. You don't own jack shit, and the moment you stop paying, or even the moment M$ decides it's no longer financially viable - the "benefits" of your subscription are gone, and you're left with nothing, just a massive trail of money spent with nothing to show for it. P.S. I do own my games on Steam. I have unencrypted game files stored on my PC, with no or trivial DRM. And there's nothing they can do about it. THAT is what true ownership of a game is, not just having a license say that you """own""" that game, while having no real control over it. You know who doesn't own their games? Peasants starting from 7th console generation, when games stopped being physical-only and/or stated getting updates/DLC.

I was referring to it being debatable as a "downside", not that it removes ownership. As I said, a lot of people don't seem to care anymore about actually owning their media, just as long as they have access to it via their subscription.

I don’t quite think it took Sony a decade to get where they are now. What do you mean by that? PlayStation has always outsold Xbox, consoles wise and it has always had top tier exclusives. Look at PS1 and PS2, what do you mean a decade??? Nintendo Wii and handhelds have been the only thing that PlayStation really competed against. It will be more competitive, which is great for gamers, but you show YOUR bias when you discount Sony’s owning of the market the past 2+ decades. It’s going to be a real fight, Microsoft needed these studios to even compete. Again, good thing for gamers!

Sony did not have the momentum that they do now at the start of the PS3 era which was all the way back in 2006. I have no "bias". If you don't remember the $600 console launch, the lack of quality single player exclusives and the many first party disappointments (MAG, Socom, Twisted Metal, Starhawk (even though I love that game), Haze, etc, during the early years of the PS3 before they hit their real stride starting with Uncharted 2 in 2009, followed up by games like Infamous 2, Resistance 3, etc. That's when Sony found their real bread and butter. Plus, if you're going to call me biased and point out "market value", Microsoft is worth a heck of a lot more than Sony and it's not even close lol. So no, none of that even matters.

I still get advertisements for PS Now on my PS4. I'm not 100% sure about how it functions, but it seems to be a backlog of games from PS2/3 that can be played on PS4 in digital format. My Sony TV also has the functionality if I connect a PS3 remote via USB (my TV is about 6 years old now).

The primary reason Microsoft bought Zenimax is almost certainly to bolster GamePass. The reason is simple: Subscription models bring in a tonne more money per year than traditional one-off purchases. Timed exclusives for GamesPass make sense would as this would lure new customers in due to fomo. Once they've got a taste of what is a pretty sweet deal, most won't leave. Go read and listen to the folks that investors and entrepeneurs like to read and listen to. Businessfolk are becoming increasingly obsessed with subscription models with low customer churn because they are extremely lucrative if you can pull them off.

For me the fundemental problem with Soulslikes is that a) I have never liked Boss fights, and especially not in constrained environmens, and b) I find it immersion-breaking to die repeatedly, and don't enjoy death as a learning mechanic. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind difficulty or dying. I almost always play on whatever the hardcore mode is for a game, and if it doesn't have a built in ironman mode, I will often enforce it myself and delete a save if I die. But for me, the enjoyment of most games is roleplaying someone trying to survive against the odds. If I can just keep dying and trying again, with little consequence, then dying isn't meaningful. True, Soulslikes try to fix this by making dying and rebirth part of the lore, and punishing faliure by forcing you to collect your souls upon death. But the fundemental disconnect is still there for me. I think I will always be a Roguelike person rather than a Soulslike person, but it's a genre I have respect for.

I still really hope Microsoft actually introduces Game Pass for PS5 and makes the Zenimax properties exclusive to it. I only really want this because it would majorly poke at Sony who has been pretty stingy with the exclusives and only throwing out scraps. This way Microsoft would have the games exclusive, but still available for people who own the PS5. And really Sony can't possibly just deny them Game Pass on PS5 if they have it that way, it would literally mean Sony is denying more games onto their system and should cause a lot of outrage. With it that way they might try and actually branch out more like they ever so slightly did with Horizon Zero Dawn.

Gamefly already is the Netflix of Games. You silly billy. Also Microsoft doesn't need exclusivity. No one does. That is the point of all of this. The age of hardware exclusivity is ending. Literally everything is moving to cloud services. Soon you will need little more than a Raspberry Pi and a proper decoder to use up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-art, software in ANY imaginable fidelity. Hardware will become the modular commonwealth. Economically, Politically, Strategically, this is the only option moving forward. The only company not ready to fully embrace this reality is Sony, but that has more to do with cutting it's own throat in distribution of other media. Sony is however, making cloud-based moves across the board. With a touch more reluctance.

2 måneder siden
Zippy Dastrange
Zippy Dastrange

@Chris Pasco We can only hope but with covid it makes extra laws and things more difficult to do. I mean I'm not crazy thinking that if people could resell the games and items they buy, with the IP owner and store getting a caped cut of the trade(5% of sale price before tax, something like that), IE whatever the end users agree on you get tax/vat/industry digital rights transfer fee. It feels like something like that would work well and easily pay for itself. That will take the artificial bloat out of the industry so we they can not afford stuff like anthem , fallout 76 or COD/BF/Ass Creed yearly or every 2 year games, ect. Focus on more sustainable and less artificial ways to make money for the executives... its a shame exclusive IP law cycles the market around white line snorting executives who gamble on each others business... I just don't see direct gambling to run an economy on to set the value of currency to to be sustainable...

@Chris Pasco Ture, with the US has giveng up on consumer rights, but with the loss of personal backups, digital rights bypassing, ect over the years in the UK/EU I don;t even think they will try it... also with exclusive IP rights they can jack up prices based on location.... it would take third or more of their consumer market to be freed from their digital authoritarianism IE end users having transferable licenses for them not to counter it with jacked up rates.... I swear exclusive distribution rights only drives cost up, we have cheap data management in the information age rev sharing should be the norm not the mafia knee caps and concert shoes...

Microsoft buying Bethesda did not shock me. Bethesda has been slowly climbing up Microsoft's ass for the past few years. A 7.5 billion dollar deal doesn't happen overnight. But I think coming out with both the Series X and Series S was a really smart move. There are are casual gamers and hardcore gamers and gamers on a budget and gamers who only care about small indie titles and gamers who only care about performance and framerates. Every one of those groups is appealed to by one or both of those consoles. That being said, PS5 is also an excellent middle ground between the two. This will be an interesting console generation, mostly because I'm not sure console generations will be a thing anymore after this one.

What MS is doing is both extremely bold and extremely dangerous for gamers. They are taking on a titanic task of making profit thru sheer quantity of games, so that amount of subscriber generated cashflow would offset amount of money they would pay otherwise buying those games. On the other hand MS is posed to become not just a major player, but monopoly(in time), meaning that they could force gamers to play by their rules. And if Win10 is any indicator, there is no limit to their ambition. They spent 1.5 billion on developing this piece of trash and then give it away for free, under certain conditions, with sole intend to make up this investment in the future. Thru adds, thru data trade. Many have been up in arms about various sports games implementing extended monetization techniques, like imbedding commercials into games(and many more). MS has been testing similar things within it OS for quite a while. And if they have enough people under their thumb and bought up everything worth buying, nothing could stop them from making unskippable adds in games, or collecting all the personal data their hearts desire. After all, where else gamers would turn for their games... What i see is not evolution of gaming, but honeypot.

If you mod your games, your level of ownership matters A LOT. It's why I've "pirated" games that I already bought legitimately before. Game Pass is probably a great deal if you don't care about modding; but I have zero interest until the games can be stored as a local copy in a static state... Though things will likely go further in the opposite direction in the future (streaming).

Microsoft did spend $2.5b on just one game to put Minecraft on every platform in the past, I'm sure they have a plan. I don't think they will do timed early releases on Game Pass - not unless they're desperate. A huge selling point was always releasing at the same time for first party titles. I'm actually a little more curious if they'll start sharing IPs between the MS owned devs.

Gamepass looks pretty amazing (hell, it convinced me to try it's underperforming brother PS Now) but I wonder if it has the same power when its price inevitably rises -Netflix now is on average double the montly price than it was 5 years ago. Or will we get a fractured streaming/liveservice landscape like currently is happening with tv-streaming? Combined with possible diminishing advantage (it's usually easier to catch up than to invent something) I'm not sure if Gamepass will be the killer that it looks now. That being said, if it looks killer now, it will sell xboxes, which is the most important thing it can do.

BigBadBirna you do realise that gamepass isn't the only option if you want to purchase the game you can, just like netflix allows you to buy disc version of their shows/movies. 2 måneder siden

Great point. Everyone talks about Gamepass like its value is inherent to the service itself, but in reality that value is entirely dependent on pricing, which Microsoft can change at any time. The current model seems entirely like a loss-leader intended to spark adoption. Then, once consumers have bought it in the model, those prices will start increasing substantially. Personally, I value ownership of games because I want to enjoy those games on my terms. I want to be able to revisit a game 5 years from now without the worry that MS took it off the platform, or is charging 4X the subscription fee they used to charge.

@Otha Bojangles But that's basically my point. Zenimax in this comparison isn't Star Wars but rather Disney or Warner Bros. I'm not denying that gaming has come far when compared to 20-30 years ago. Quite the opposite, they've made huge strides in the public eye. But when you take a publisher like Zenimax, it's not really a fitting comparison to hold them next to a single IP or Studio.

I question if a Netflix style subscription model will drive the big developers to strive to make the best game. If you sell a game for an individual price, then you’re incentivised to make an excellent game so it sells. If it’s mediocre and broken it doesn’t sell. If they already have your money from subscription, then why do they need to go that extra yard? That isn’t saying there won’t be fantastic games, but it creates a business environment that getting a basic game out on time means more than making a masterpiece. And if you question that logic, look how Microsoft we’re going to drop Halo for Christmas in a less than ideal state to push gamepass until people pointed out it wasn’t up to the expectations of the core Microsoft fan base.

That's not the case at all. These developers are still incentivised to make a good game, not by sales figures but by play time instead. If no one is playing their game why would Microsoft sink money into them. Microsoft will be looking at the play time / how many of their subscribers play their games to work out how much money to reinvest back into each studio. A great example is sea of thieves it launched with a minimal amount of content but they continued working on it making it into something that was incredibly fun that you can sink hundreds of hours into. The only thing I'm worried about is that developers don't have an incentive to make short single player games if their play time is around 8hours whereas the studios goal is total engagement time. I also see a worry with micro-transactions becoming more prevalent as thats the only other additional revenue stream a game studio can have outside of game-pass. Although micro-transactions were already becoming the norm anyway...

"I-C-O", "Eye-Coh" — Um, "Eeh-Coh" | A fantastic game, but I agree about those damn horse controls. The thing is, they can't "modernize" either that or the climbing controls because the original devs wanted them to be frustrating, with Agro sometimes not obeying commands and overall being kinda shitty. No, for real, you can google that. Also, MS is scaring me now. "We have no confidence in our own exclusive IPs, here, have all the $ and give us yours". What now? (I have a good PC, so not affected ) As for indies, let's remember XBLA's sales popularized a bunch of'em before Steam became the primary indie venue. Add: Amazon is going to launch their own cloud/streaming gaming service! Yay? It's called Luna and they have their own Xbox controller knockoff for sale.

Definitely getting an Xbox next generation, although the endless barrage of Sony third-person open-world crafting levelling up side-quest simulators had already convinced me prior to this.

I don't need ultimate, since I just have a laptop, Gamespass for PC is 1$ for the first month and $5 after that, the main reason I hadn't bothered was that for a long time I was refusing to update Windows 10, but after having to reinstall after that broken upgrade last year was eventually pushed I'm up to date again.

@Chris Pasco yep. Their marketing is going to be specific to ps5 only but they'll shadow drop it once they know they got the ps5s in everyones homes. Not even making this up, a lot of their marketing recently did a sudden 180 after their latest show so anything they say now needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

As long as one-time-purchase offline games are still the primary focus, I won't mind if this was part of the future of the games industry. As soon as they go all online, that's when they will permanently lose me as a customer and make me move to fresher hobbies. That's all I can say.

The video games industry has a downright shitty track record with publishers/developers being purchased by larger companies (See EA and its dozen closures or the Activision/Blizzard merger), so color me extremely suspicious of anything good that happens next...

Dude... This is microsoft. They make money by just existing. You seriously think they are going to push for Microtransaction in games that are supposed to set the standard and sell their xbox ecosystem. 1st party games are held to a higher standard than that buddy. EA and Activision are just examples of shitty publishers especially EA. Take 2 is an example of a better publisher than those 2.
