Audacity is a great, free piece of audio software. When you make a selection and hit Z in it, you move the selection boundaries to "zero crossings" which essentially makes the pops and clicks on cuts a thing of the past. Personally used the tool a lot in editing podcasts, so although it's a different goal it served me well.

More unsolicited comments, hooray: I would not enjoy random beeps when going up or down through a menu, but if they were pitched up/down depending on the menu element's position, it becomes really pleasant to step through. Random becomes distracting, like you're not sure what you just clicked on, but if you hear the beep's pitch go up or down you immediately know you're going the right way even if you're not looking. It'll even let you identify specific menu options blindly (for whatever value that has...).

Music idea - for the ship, have a theme that can occasionally arise but have it slowly gain more instruments and things as your progress throughout the entire game, so at the start when you're alone just out of cryo there's no music and everything feels quiet and harsh but as you make a home there with new crewmates and such music is slowly added and the atmosphere becomes slowly more comforting and homey. Yes, this idea is 100% nicked from Tarry Town from Breath Of The Wild. Also, it wouldn't be constantly playing it'd come up every now and again like how in Stardew the seasonal themes just play once through when you wake up so they don't overstay their welcome and drive the player insane.

Hi. I'm an amateur musician and sound designer. A good free software for stuff like this would be FL Studio. It has an upgraded version with more bells and whistles, but the free version gets the job done and would make sound design like this (especially looping and splicing) a breeze. I'm interested to see what music looks like for this. Being a musician, I'm the opposite: making music makes sense to me, but I would have no idea where to start making a game.

Since this is a space trucker scenario, you might actually be able to get away with muffled generic country music. AND, have it only play near the cockpit so you get that nice fade when you walk away. But there's also free songs on sites that you can download that are CC0. I've personally found some pretty good ones that work well and are unique enough to give a good sound for the time-being.

I dunno how much you can do in Goldwave, but an easier way to make those loops: take a piece a bit longer than you want, chop it in half, move the two bits so what used to be the start and end to the middle, and crossfade those. Your new beginning and end will work perfectly together because they already did, and now the part that caused the pops is just faded between perfectly. Also lets you make looping stereo ambience sounds, because we don’t have to live in 1995 anymore.

I think having music on the ship could wreck the atmosphere. What might be cool is to have a music track for the cockpit that is theoretically the actual music playing in there. Perhaps there could be a few songs that can be selected by the player and they can actually find or purchase or unlock new "cassettes" to play as the cockpit music. Might be a neat bonus reward from a particularly appreciative client. "Here, my brother played this all the time, but now he's gone to work in the asteroid mines. You should take it." Have a techno track and a smooth jazz track and whatever else, and make it just a simple 30-60 second loop since the player won't be spending a long time there in the same place. Just would be cool for the player to walk in the cockpit and "their character's music" is playing for them.

If you're working with purely looping ambient noises, there's a quick trick you can use to eliminate the pop. 1. Split the clip in half (A & B Sections) 2. Move the first half (A) to the end, so the new clip starts in what would have been the middle of the old clip (or the beginning of B) 3. Crossfade the B to A transition This way the waveform of the new clip will always start and end at the exact same height. Obviously this only works on clips that don't require a specific start/end, but it can save a lot of micro editing.

Maybe add multiple humming sound generators around the outside of the ship with a steeper cutoff and assign each one to left or right channels. That way as the player walks around the ship they'd get different amounts of humming in each ear. Make the player feel like they're moving through sound instead of listening to a broken Hip Clips.

If you're going to use a "scale", why not make it interesting? But I don't think you'd want to go more than a third or fourth away from the base pitch anyway. That only leaves microtones if you don't want to hear the same seven pitches over and over. Then it might as well be random for the typical western ear.

@Hubblebub Lumbubwub yes they are, that's up to him to assess. Probably you could start with playing around with some royalty-free small test music bits to get a feel whether the game needs more than ambient soundscape. No need to have long final perfectly mixed/mastered original tracks for that. Who knows, maybe Yahtzee already did that and already knows that the game would benefit from music. (as a side note, to me as well it sounds fine with just ambient, menu music could be nice though and some soundbytes for specific events like completing quests, arriving in a new place; great games alternate between music and silence skillfully)

2 måneder siden
Hubblebub Lumbubwub

When it comes to sound (or everything really), I think experimenting is always good, if you have the resources (timeee). Even if something already feels good, it might turn out that when you e.g. put the appropriate music on, it's all even better, you just didn't know it! Always trust empirical experimentation over your current feelings, because they are limited by experience.

Hm... it might be just me, but I have an ear for looping sounds, that is to say if a loop is too short, only a few seconds, I will start to hear the repetition of it, I will hear that it's looped, which breaks immersion a bit (like recognising the most popular stock samples). So personally I do not agree with the tip to cut ambient sound files to just a few seconds - the longer they are, the more difficult is to hear the loop. (Also a lot of sound editing tools can be set to automatically snap to the point where the waveform is at 0 so no cutting needed. I would also just use crossfade to make the sound endings blend into each other. Also not a sound engineer, but I have played around with sounds a bit.)

2 måneder siden
cazwam
cazwam

The easiest way to make a seamless loop. Crop down the sound to a reasonable length as you did. Cut the waveform in half. Take the first half of the audio and place it at the end of the second half. Drag the half you just moved back so the two halves are overlapping. Then crossfade the two halves to fade between them. doing this means there is 0 clipping at the loop point because the real change is happening slowly over time in the middle of the track. It works best for ambiances or similar noise. For a new audio program, look into Reaper, it's becoming an industry standard for sound design Its got a fully functional demo that never runs out Winrar style. a full license is only £60 and gets you constant updates for the next 2 major version numbers. it's completely customizable both aesthetically and functionally even down to scripting your own functions it runs better than pretty much any other big DAW, and I've never had it crash on me in the two years I've used it just stay away from ProTools. It was made by God in the '90s to punish sound designers for our sins
