Not trying to defend Jason here, but something to realise is that social media is designed (intentionally or otherwise) to encourage dogpiling behaviour, since it signal boosts and self reinforces. And then when you start getting hundreds or thousands of negative messages, a negative mindset follows, and the threshold between what seem to the reader as good or bad posts decreases -- so what was intended when written to be constructive is not interpreted that way when read. And then if they post replies while still in this negative mindset, then it just makes things worse and worse -- the person who in their mind wrote an entirely reasonable message then gets a rude reply or gets blocked, which then annoys them, and they're more likely to post a ruder response (or encourage others to do so), and the downward spiral continues.

Måned siden
Mirality

Twitter is especially bad for this; the short message length causes a lot of nuance to get lost, and people aren't all that careful about word choice either, leaving it wide open to misinterpretation.

and don’t get me started on this voice acting Like someone trying to figure out how punk rock Americans talk Who woulda thunk 😂 The edgy voice lines and writing I’ve heard so far is just weird The NPCs don’t seem to think or seem alive The city looks empty Someone told me it’s because they wanna preserve its for launch And I’m like that’s weird Why save it so people can nitpick and wonder ? I wouldn’t imagine that being a great business strategy The driving looks stiff and beyond a chore They took so much out of the game and if it wasn’t for the obsessed fanboys not many people would know It’s like the 48 minute demo isn’t even the game anymore “Definitely no guy or girl magnet” 😂😂😂

Calling it "crunch-lite" seems awfully dismissive of people having to do overtime for 6 weeks. While it's "only" one day of extra work per week, it's still one day off that they don't have to recover mentally and physically from an already full week of work. Crunch is crunch. Disguising it with stuff like "lite" is quite harmful.

I found the Imperial side of Squadrons story....mildly, more interesting than the Rebel's side of the plot. The Imperial Remnant is just much more interesting than the New Republic. Plus, I just felt like the at any point the Rebel's were one line of dialogue away from asking me to participate in a group hug and that is not something I'm about lol. Good on you Nick for doing what you did by taking a stance. Everything good Schreier does is tainted by his egotism. It's a damn shame he can't handle this like an adult, because he could accomplish so much more if he could just put that aside.

gotta say, after my lovely little discussion with Nick in the last video regarding journalists being open about their affiliations with companies and just listening to his calm, measured and reasonable thoughts on the industry at large i must say i really like Nick! dude clearly tries very hard to be as unbiased in his responses and thoughts as possible and i really appreciate that in a person! and then to hear him say "keep your thoughts coming in the comments!" is really quite nice to hear that even opposing thoughts are welcome in the discourse :) i got so used to hearing YT creators and "influencers" being hostile and refusing to listen to any dissenting opinion that doesn't please their echo chamber that someone just being open to discourse is refreshing. keep up the good work, Nick. you made this series one of my favourites to tune into :)

Måned siden

Glad you feel that way. I’m always open to discourse as long as it stays respectful and doesn’t become personal. It’s the way I’ve managed every community I’ve been in charge of and if you moderate it and don’t let the bickering take over, things stay pretty relaxed even on hot topic issues.

What's particularly frustrating about the whole 'is CDPR really crunching?' situation and yet another Schreier egostorm is that CDPR could have shut down this petty debate in a single formal statement - "We will be working extra hours on these terms, this is how it happened, we understand this is frustrating to some but [reason or excuse]". That's an hour of PR team work. Instead, it's been two weeks of yelling and we're barely even talking about the actual issue that started it any more. I want more discussion about the difference between overtime and outright crunch, what are fair terms for overtime work, and how to do it right. And now it's just sound and fury.

Totally agree with Squadrons. Silent protagonists can be okay in some circumstances (even text dialogue choices can make it feel like you're actually participating). But usually your character is just an empty, lifeless void, and every time another character talks into that void it shatters any illusion that they're a character as well, instead they're just expositing to themselves which comes off as strange and inhuman.

I wouldn’t call it “crunch lite”, that’s dishonest. Any overtime is *not* a form of crunch. Crunch is what *exceeds* overtime. If overtime is considered between 40h-60h per week, than crunch would be past 60h, not passed 40h.

Måned siden
mrshmuga9
mrshmuga9

@UnreasonableOpinions I would agree that in most cases when crunch gets brought up, it likely is "real" crunch in the 60-80h range. This case with CDPR seems to be an exception. I think what's worse about it in the games industry is that you could crunch up to a game's launch... only to be let go at the end of it and have to find a new job. I recall that happening some years ago. Not sure if it's still happening or if that was/is only limited to entry-level workers, but a crappy situation nonetheless.

Måned siden
UnreasonableOpinions
UnreasonableOpinions

Yeah. It's actually an unfortunate sign of how toxic and miserable much of games dev is to work that the language of overwork itself has lost nuance. You can safely call any over-listed-hours work in dev 'crunch' and have a solid 95% chance of being completely correct. Hell, if it's getting Bioware-level bad to the point people are going on extended stress leave I don't think the term conveys how bad things are. I've work a lot of jobs in my life and the only one that ever saw people on stress leave outside of extreme personal circumstances was in the damned army.

Måned siden
bird3713

I sorta agree with this- I work in an industry where for 3 months of a year, it’s expected that I work 50-60 hour weeks. Hearing that these developers are adding 8 hours to their week makes me think “yeah I’ve been there”, not “holy cow they’re working these guys to the bone”. With that said, if you read about the crunch time for other games (Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem come to mind), that is truly some soul crushing working conditions.

I know it's designed for space combat, but it really is grating to see feet touch the floor in Squadrons, both in cutscenes and otherwise. It looks like the characters are floating, which goes against all the super duper realistic lighting and effects they have going. There's plenty of time to get a PS5 (just go with it). And I think it's really neat both consoles will get an NVMe SSD. And for the PS, a functioning store.

Squadrons clearly half assed most of the game to simply focus on what it truly does well, the multiplayer ship combat. Unfortunately everything from the single player, to the refinement of the menus, options (I can't even switch out the defaut trash reticle), and the variety within the multiplayer element suffer. At least they only charge you $40 for the game. Is the game worth $40? I mean it depends what we're comparing it to. For $40 I played Overwatch for 2 years, a degree of longevity I very much doubt I'll have with Squadrons, but compared to most other games these days that charge you $60 regardless that it's a pile of trash or offers little if any replayability, and I'd say yea, Squadrons is worth the $40. I kinda appreciate that they clearly realized they were pushing out a game lacking polish and reduced the price as a result rather than charging $60 and giving the community the middle finger when we squawked. At the end of the day I'm having fun with the multiplayer combat. The game is undeniably arcady, but also marries this rather well with elements that more simmy players appreciate such as locked 1st person perspective, loadout customization, and the ability to redistribute power between ship systems. Monitoring all these various elements while also dogfighting leaves you wishing for an extra pair of arms as you pull off a slide, reallocate your shield positioning and power, reacquire your target, pop a cooldown, and try to steer and aim almost simultaneously, but when you successfully pull it off, defeating opponents feels quite rewarding. I hope they'll support the game with more maps and ship upgrades so I can continue to enjoy it for longer than I'm currently anticipating.

Silent protagonists are the absolute worst for any sort of story driven narrative, in my opinion. They are cool if you are expected to just exist in the world and do stuff in it with little to no consequence, but when you have a driving narrative and your character just says nothing and gets barked at, it feels like we have no agency and no force in the story at all and it's impossible to relate to the struggles of the character (again: in my opinion). Also all the dialogue has to be written in this "we have to leave space for people to self-insert" manner and never gets as defined or as adequately explored as it could be if they had a counterpart who was actively reacting to the events of the story within its world.

Måned siden

@Damian Yoss That was the most egregious example for me. It's one thing for studios to bribe reviewers with things like access for better scores; that shows the studio knows it's playing at nonsense. It's another to just assume you deserve a score and get mad at a reviewer for low-scoring it like they didn't do their job and let you down.

Måned siden

@The Escapist Makes me think of Neil Druckmann emailing review outlets for scoring their game less than 80%... Many consumers consider games media to just be an additional arm of marketing for AAA games development and it would seem certain production heads assume the same.

Måned siden
UnreasonableOpinions
UnreasonableOpinions

He is a real journalist. What he does is largely investigative reporting, which is the very definition of journalism, and in frustratingly short supply in games media. He's just also an arsehole. And annoyingly, is an arsehole in his own time in a space he uses for professional reporting. If the guy used his Twitter exclusively as a personal space for social interaction, I wouldn't care if he was slinging crap in it. But he uses it as a professional space to do much of his work to gain the advantage, and then when he acts like an arsehole in a space he uses professionally, tries to dismiss it as 'too bad, it's my personal space'. It's like swearing at customers in the shop, in uniform, and then getting mad when it gets you told off because 'I'm not on shift'.

Måned siden
Daras Thrae

When I hear about crunching and rushing for the release date, I wonder "didn't you consider NOT advertising the game before it's almost ready for release?". We really don't need to find out about a game 3 years ahead of schedule, only for it to get a sudden release date it can't reach. I mean, in theory you could finish making the game, then advertise it, and keep it in your pocket until you generate however much hype you need to sell it. No scheduling issues possible. Crunch becomes hell in especially big companies, that have enough money to hold out after production, unlike indies that basically have to shoot out their games and hope they swim.

In a vacuum, I'd agree with you. However, this was basically the problem that Duke Nukem Forever ran into. ...Well, ok, aside from just being a shitty game. ONE OF the problems that made the game take forever was that they just kept trying to use the latest and greatest technology as it was coming out, so they kept restarting development from scratch. If you try to make the game before advertising it, it's gonna look like when it was made instead of looking like a modern game when it actually does fully release. Technology be fast, yo.

Måned siden

@Ica Rue Nintendo development focuses on individual features and mechanics and then combines them later during a pre-production crunch. So they don't really save projects for later release they just build a catalogue of features they can apply to multiple IPs when a project calls for them. And Nintendo is notoriously strict about deadlines. The Japanese don't view "crunch" culturally as negative. More as an opportunity to gain favor and build esteem.
