I loved the first two games, but this one is a letdown, the combat is fucking boring and as it is said in the vid as well, it draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags on and on... I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and everything is fucking slow. It's not challenging at all it's just boring and slow...

Usually her reviews are quite good, which makes this one really disappointing. TL3 is just as good as the first two, with some nice add ons such as new classes and pets. I guess it's hust a game for us old gamers that enjoy the nostalgia and fun references.

Players are going back to T2. There are enough mods to really boost that game, especially with end game content. A real shame. Still, T2 is still amazing. Time means little these days for older games.

Wasn't this supposed to be an MMO? I guess this is why the game feels underwhelming; they completely changed the purpose for the game mid development. Never a good sign.

@Kevin Temple "Co-founder Max Schaefer (Erich's brother) recognized that both developers were part of the critical team behind Runic's development, and with their departure, they had to rethink their plans for the Torchlight MMO... ...In January 2020, Echtra and Perfect World announced that Torchlight Frontiers had been rebranded to Torchlight III, and had dropped several of the planned MMO-like aspects in favor of a more linear progression in the game. Schaefer said "During development, you often discover what type of product a game was meant to be and we found Torchlight Frontiers was meant to be a true successor to Torchlight I and II. Based on this and extensive feedback from our Alpha testers, we decided it was time to take the game back to its roots and model it after the classic Torchlight games that action RPG fans have come to love." The companies affirmed the game would no longer be free-to-play but instead will be a premium title, with plans for a Microsoft Windows release in mid-2020. A closed alpha period will launch in January 2020. An early access version of the game was released on Steam on the 13th of June 2020." TLDR; Torchlight III was supposed to be Torchlight Frontiers, a Free to Play MMO.

This wasn't made by Runic, the devs of Torchlight 1 & 2 and Hob; Runic sadly closed its doors a while ago. TL3 is made by a new studio, Echtra, which might be why it has a different feel compared to the previous installments? (Also if you like exploration-focused games, Hob is really good. Very different game than TL1 & 2, but plays well and has an excellent aesthetic.)

Based on other reviews these are sentiments shared by many people who love aRPG's. In fact this one is rather positive compared to ones I've seen. I think this one is on point in calling it an okay game where other publications are calling it a trainwreck of a left over mmo development.

Disappointing to hear the triumphant turn in direction didn't save the game. I liked the original but that was before D3 Reaper of Souls launched. Considering it has to be compared to Reaper of Souls, Path of Exile or the often overlooked Titan Quest, it had a tough fight ahead of it and it looks and sounds like it lost that battle.

Måned siden

Forget diablo comparisons, we lost that franchise to activision long ago. Any game that enters this genre has to stand up to poe or bring some genuine twist to it. So back to poe it is!

Måned siden
Sean Fager
Sean Fager

@Winkberry I can respect that. As I get older, and my free time gets more finite (both as a ratio of time and in an absolute sense), I find myself drifting to higher standards. Like, a free but meh game (8 hours) is less valuable than an awesome game that'll cost me 20 bucks and lasts the same length of time. And that cost v time v quality rate is different between different people, there's not a One True Way. But for 30 bucks someone can get Spelunky and the original X Com and Soma and Doom and Dwarf Fortress and Stalker and Star Control 2: The UrQuan Masters and Prospector, right? I think the sheer sum of 9/10 and 10/10 games out there, multiplied by the number of hours they take, is either at or near critical mass. The point where one could just play 9+/10 games and easily fill all the free time they might have. And the crash in price most games go through in the first few years... I think it puts us into the space where we can demand better than average. Museum pieces, not dentist waiting room art.

Måned siden
Winkberry
Winkberry

To me it's more a question of cost vs entertainment. I'm happy with okay if it's going to amuse me for a week and not break my bank. For T3, $33 for a game I am almost certainly going to get bored of after a few hours is definitely not worth it, but if it was $10 I might consider it. I enjoyed the first 2 games (on sale) but they're all pretty samey.

Måned siden
Night Cat

Oh, that's a bit of a disappointment. Sounds like it has the same problems as Diablo 3, Victor Vran, Van Helsing, Grim Dawn, & practically every other ARPG out there. Going to stick with Path Of Exile instead, again, until the heat death of the universe, it seems.

The first one is the one with a really solid reputation though. As far as I remember, only a small niche of people considered Torchlight 2 to be a rival of Diablo 3 and the like, most people saw it as average and myself I couldn't find in it what made Torchlight 1 so amazing. At least, it was still the same devs though.

@Johnnyb3g00d The Runic studios that made torchlight 1+2 closed down, the studio that made this game bought the Torchlight license. This was also supposed to be a free to play mmo until the changed the direction partway through development. That's why it's different

Måned siden
Johnnyb3g00d
Johnnyb3g00d

I wonder this too. Not only do they have two games of the same exact genre under their belt, but so many major successes have come out recently that makes it easy to know what works and what doesn’t. Releasing a lukewarm game from that is surprising.

It's too bad the MMO part didn't work out. I had access to the project from their initial alpha build on and some of the planned mechanics and features would have been fun to see. Amy is takin the piss out of this game though. It's aimed at kids and kids love it. Amy just used a cheese character with a cheese build and doesn't know how to set her pets to loot for her, so the tutorial and story path of the game was far too easy, and unnecessarily frustrating. The other classes are extremely fun to play and there are parts of the game that are brutally hard with dynamic boss events.

Måned siden
Zenn Exile
Zenn Exile

@Corrupt Ai can anything less be said about anything else at the development level? It's all a handful of engines doing the exact same work with different textures if you want to diminish it to the copy-pasta core of what *is* the modern gaming market. Assets, tools, and whole projects are traded like Garbage Pail Kids and are completely interchangeable between IPs. You're angry at a semantic layer of imagination you built at the edge of your own personal echo chamber like a bubble of willful ignorance to fend off the things that challenge your sense of reality. Nobody ever taught you how to pop that bubble or how to avoid rebuilding it with thought exercises, and the idea of thought exercise itself sets your brain to floppy eared puppy with it's head titled 90 degrees, so I get where yer comin from. But is this the hill you're ready to die on?

Måned siden
Corrupt Ai

@Hammock Father it's not a question of validity, it's a question of bias and subsequent effort. And the Cheese Class isn't a novelty it's fairly well established itself as an industry standard. Some people won't even eat a sammich without cheese.
