For the cleaning part: maybe have the cleaning equipment lose power or break, so that you have to manage it in between journeys, and risk either going bankrupt or having a very, very dirty ship, with malfunctioning components and parasites crawling around.

an 8 bit version of the dev diary AND zero punctuation theme is an idea also in terms of character emotions, i think it would go a long way to have the sprites have a few black pixels show mouth movement when they talk. it would go a surprisingly long way in terms of immersion

Ok, I know this comment is coming a little late, but look into the software BFXR! it's a free software originally created for game jams that allows for really really easy 8bit sound effect creation. I don't know how useful it will be in the future of this specific game, but it's a very easy to use and very versatile sound effect maker. You shouldn't have to download random 8 bit sounds to find what you want!

i disagree that giving the music for free is devaluing their work, i think it's getting their work out to a greater audience, the value of the work is the value of the advertising. you are underselling the value of BEING in another work, they can put that on a resume, they can get a credit in the game and people who hear it in the cockpit radio and think "hey, that's pretty nice" can look them up and they can make money off that. if they want to give it to you for free, and it's any good, i'd say do it, one of the hardest things to get on a resume is experience. as for the past self bit, there is an expression: "write your code like the person who has to maintain it is a violent psychopath who knows where you live"

Reminds me of something Dan Harmon said on a Game Grumps episode. Something to the effect of, "pretend there's no such thing as music. Edit everything like that, hit all the emotional beats you want without music, and when that's done, you can go back and add in all the music you like." Granted, he was speaking about editing film, but I'd wager it's good advice. Love watching this come along. Looking forward to getting to play. Cheers.

Something I've always enjoyed about the Fallout games is the radio stations. I would quite like a radio that plays original scores BUT I feel that you need to allow players to load their own music as well (whether that's just adding it to the radio folder in the game files or through an in game menu)

There's a place out there for "we're just friends in a garage art" but you can't ask for rewrites or 8 hour shifts. People are done when they want to be. I write better erotica then anything folks pay for, I give it away. I do think the artistic world has been negatively effected by the belief that everyone goes pro when in fact that's the exception. When my little sister asked to color I didn't tell her to call my agent. There's public domain music and stuff already available on basic subscription. You can give someone an opportunity to be nice Yahtzee, but you probably shouldn't. See, that's the problem with unknown talent constantly asking for a pro deal. If we're gonna be business practical, you shouldn't make a deal with anyone because other legal options exist.

I feel kind of sad about the whole devaluing of art thing. I make solo indie games myself, and I don't charge for my games because I know they're still not good enough to the point where people would pay actual money for them. Does that mean I'm devaluing myself?

I am coding a game at the moment, too, and I can confirm that including custom key mapping/controller bindings is a real pain in the arse. While I didn't initially throw in my hat for musical composition, I've been thinking about what I'd do. And I had an idea that pays no attention to how easy it would be to code. You stated you wanted a theme. That's easy enough but when fights break out, the music has to shift. But it doesn't have to mean the tune has to change, only the genre. I'd compose a theme that plays when you're flying, but create three alternate versions of that same song using different instruments to provide context. So for example, perhaps a pan flute on the main theme, or a theramin. As the ship gets dirtier, the version playing shifts to being played on an accordion or violin. Finally a rusty saw for when it's really dirty. So the player doesn't even need to check menus to have an idea of the cleanliness of the ship. This strategy can be repeated for any number of situations.

Leaning into the radio idea: Supplement it with a record player, or maybe some kind of walkman type device, and allow players to import their own audio files which will show up as tracks for it in-game. “Why not just disable the in-game music and listen to Spotify while you play?” - because the diegetic music could be implemented immersively - adding a little vinyl hiss or lo-fi cassette crackle, being muffled when you’re in a different room, tinny or echoey soundscape effects. That sort of thing.

I personally like the idea of music changing slightly depending on the mood. Aka, being minimal and calm with a simple tune, but adding more instruments as tension rises, while keeping the same base tune. For example, kingdom hearts games, where sora is in that shadow area at the start. It’s slow and calm, but then the combat kicks in and then the T U B A! I'll probably still clean everything every time anyways. More than likely, I will make a routine to check them in an order. What you could do, assuming you don't already, is charge for the cleaning supplies. Cleaning more often means having to spend more on cleaning. Or, cleaning one thing takes a long time to do, that way the trade-off is time spent cleaning for clean modules.

A possible way to still have a radio with flexibility is a system where people can add there own personal library. Now I haven't the faintest idea how hard that would be to code or if it would be woth it with how many people just steam there music there is also the fact you give up tone control of time between game music. Personally I think the lack of music could be nice but some might find it to quite with only ship the sounds of equipment.

Why not look at something like AudioNetwork for a radio soundtrack for different radio stations? And if we're going to do that, why not have a GTA-Style radio, with interrupts for made-up space news (or confirming rumours after you've completed those tasks), galaxy weather (which could be an Ollie Williams-style scream of "SPACE WEATHER!" *_OR_* actual forecasts for planets) and commercials for businesses you've created on planets. I've even compiled a list (for my own uses) of young people music from AudioNetwork and SoundCloud.

If each planet has a unique track, you can have a "muffled" version of the track that plays when you're in the ship but docked, fading into the full version when you're Planetside. Adding to that, as you leave the planets atmosphere, you can have the music fade away into the background, until the only thing you can hear is the hum and hiss of the ship. Every planet is alive, some joyous and free, some mechanical and industrial, but space is quiet; calm, but terrifying. You could tie music cues to specific characters too, but that's story stuff and I'm sure you'll get to that later.

So I have a simple questions regarding the dirty bin mechanic: Say the bin changes to the first dirty sprite, what is the current penalty to the player? -To incentivize actually cleaning the bin instead of just letting it get dirtier? And how would the ramping of the penalty be applied to the dirtier stages? I love the series and all the work you do, so I wasn't sure if you have personally addressed this and just not to us, the audience/fanbase, or if you wanted to focus on the penalty at a later stage of development. Great stuff! Keep it up!

While I know you’ll be skeptical upon reading, try the destiny approach to the soundtrack and have time increments where there is no music and just ambient sound and the like and have softer, subtle tracks play after certain time intervals. This obviously isn’t for anything scripted or important, just the minutiae between missions and the like. That way there will be enough time between songs that the player doesn’t get fatigued. Plus, you don’t have to choose just one person to score the whole soundtrack, you could take tracks from everyone that’s offering their music. Maybe ask them for what they specialize in or like making like ambiance or intense fight music.

I see you've stolen my idea from my comment on the last video without giving me credit (kappa). I do think an in-cockpit radio would be cool, and I honestly think the best way to do it would be making cassettes a collectible item. The default you start with could be a variation of the main theme. And you can choose "favorites" that will randomly be selected whenever you enter the cockpit. You can collect cassettes from grateful customers or buy them shops or find in hidden places. Perhaps a random chance to "find" a cassette tucked away on your own spaceship when cleaning or fixing a certain part of your ship as a one time event. "What's this jammed in here?" Or maybe you could find one on a junk planet that you have to explore for scavenging. Actually, are junk planets a thing? Seems like such a world would present neat opportunities for encounters or missions.
