I will never again pre order another game after getting screwed over with New Gundam Breaker. Pre ordering Star Wars Squadrons didn't count because that was a gift from a friend who convinced me it was worth it. So far that was the only good pre order purchase I have made.

Pre ordering to play immediately is one way to avoid having to avoid spoilers. I'm not sure that the wants of content creators to have immediate access necessarily trump those of consumers. I'm a patient gamer though so don't have any particular need.

Personally, I see preorders as a "I know I'm going to get this whenever it comes out, so I might as well just pay for it now" kinda thing, and are reserved for developers I trust to put out good content.

I feel like you should only pre-order a game if it has had good coverage, your almost absolutely certain you'll like it, it's a mid to smaller release game, and you want to vote with your money by getting a deluxe pre-order edition.

This isn't so much Yahtze being forced into an uncomfortable position as a complete farce of a conversation with the joke being that both sides don't simply agree, but overwhelmingly *know* that there is no sane reason to preorder a game. Jack is no better off because his side of the argument is too easy with just as little to say. "...or if society is going to collapse," also seems to allude to idiotic panic buying of toiletpaper due to the covid situation.

You should pre order a game so you can get them sweet sweet pre order bonuses ;) and also support the company.... and also you do typically know how good the game will be before it comes out because reviews tend to come out before the game releases and you can always cancel a preorder... yea I feel confident with that argument.... mhmmmm

The only way I usually preorder is when the games release is soon and I want it in my mailbox when I get home from work that day I know I would get annoyed sometimes cause I would want to buy a game physically at a store on the release date on my way home from work and I would never see it. So I just started ordering shit on amazon

I like preorders for games I already know from companies I trust. Many games I play and buy are small, niche, or limited physical release. As an example, Etrian odyssey. I preordered 5 and to this day I haven't seen a physical copy in stores since a week after release. I dont trust online shopping as I've had too many 'lost' orders and stolen packages. I hate digital games because I dont actually own them and when my internet goes down they lock despite being on my home console. Now preordering a game from ea, ubisoft, etc or a new iP or indie game I would advise against. Wait for reviews, or gameplay videos. Be informed, do what feels right.

Launch day sales play a big part in how successful a game is, and the less successful a game is, the less its going to be supported after release by the developers. So if they release a buggy mess of a game, and nobody buys it because the reviews all say its a buggy mess of a game, then its much harder for them to justify spending the money to fix the bugs, where as millions of dissatisfied customers who you can potentially sell dlc to at a later date would sway them otherwise. So I'd never preorder anything but I totally support the mindless masses doing it.

Yahtzee should have taken the piss on this one. What about all of the awesome bonuses you get! If you don't preorder you are not going to be fully hyped for release date. You should trust game publishers explicitly to make amazing products and give them confidence with preorders.

guarantee a copy? I remember back when Twilight Princess came out, gamestop didn't have my preordered copy, but I walked into Circuit City and picked one up off the shelf. As long as my money isn't taken before it ships, I'm cool with preordering. Also with the caveat that they need to be willing to cancel for any reason whatsoever. So preordering from just about anywhere but gamestop.

Your strained effort to make your debate appear funny with your frequent references to the world/society ending because (and also despite) of preorders, made me almost forget that the sheer existence of preorders in general poses the threat of noone actually using a product and instead just them 'Radiation Dispersal (tm)' - 'Mould Helmets (c)' collecting dust or titles hanging in digital library limbo; never to be actually downloaded/installed ever... Which leads to review-bombings from angry miss-outs or whatever. I was thinking of the RayTraceMyButtoxHear 3080 and the immense scale of scalping that is going on while writing this, but also: How long until there will be games that are timed exclusive deals that you can only preorder/download so many times, as to create the new craze of money hungry franchise trolls' wet dream of high value through artificial scarcity? ('Italo Borther's 3D All Stars' timed digital download from 9-10-dough comes kinda near that, no?) "Only the first 2000 preorders get the once in a lifetime chance to play as Darth Dingus and Baby-Yoghurt in Æ's all new: 'Trek Wars: Colon Squadron' !!"

Overall i don't believe in pre-ordering or buying games at full launch price in general. About the only time i'd say it's a good idea is when you're buying a system at launch and there's little choice of what to play and there are no sales in sight for any of the games on the system... In general i don't buy games 'til they're at least six months old and on sale (perhaps after about three months if i'm lucky) or i've at the very least gone to different shops not long after launch window looks for discounts. The only games i've actually pre-ordered were Battlefield 3 and 4, and i only really needed to pre-order BF4 because it was the only PS4 launch title that really interested me (with most of the systems great games coming later) :) . All in pre-ordering is nothing but an anti-consumer trick that locks you into paying full price for such games, on nothing but faith alone :) .

Still mad as fuck that Gamestop gave away my preorder bonus for Castlevania Portrait of Ruin. THE WHOLE POINT IS IT'S FOR ME, THE BOY WHO ORDERED IT. I had to drive like an hour and a half back then to get to a Gamestop, you know that? But I wanted the big and cool bonus for that game. It was like an Art Book and a Stylus and I think even more than that. Just for pre-ordering! Blew my little mind. And then Gamestop raped me. It just bent me over and took my innocence. Just took what it wanted and threw cab fare at me while also spitting on me. Fuck preorders. It hasn't gotten prettier since then.

This was all very funny, but the sad truth is that an insanely depressing number of brainless twats still keep this rotting industry afloat by preordering the latest bullshit as soon as it is announced, which is what feeds preorder culture and its insidious FOMO where _not_ preordering makes you a second-class player who will never get all the additional preorder-exclusive content which has no reason to not just be part of the fucking game except to make you feel bad for not preordering. Makes me fucking sad.

The Lords of Chaos has decided that they want to see Yahtzee struggle to defend Pre-orders for a laugh LOL. On the serious side of things, i think pre-ordering is fine and dandy as long as you realize 2 points : A. With the info you received at the day you PO, you have faith/confidence that it will be good. this is why i recommend doing a digital pre-purchase at least one month before release because by then enough info will be released to make an informed decision (if on PC), as for console players buying physical copies..... think of it as a collectible that you can sort out neatly when you want to make a "gaming room" and that way it's not that big of a loss if the game turns out bad. B. You are mentally prepared to be disappointed should the product will be bad because you are essentially making a 60$ gamble (if AAA) on a product that has the potential to get a) cancelled or b) delayed so much you have lost your memory if said upcoming game Have i pre-ordered/pre-purchase games? UMVC3, MHW, and Bloodstained. The only game that these 2 points apply is MHW and Bloodstained because UMVC3 is a port of the old one.

I used to enjoy pre ordering games due to how good some pre order bonuses used to be. It used to be a surprise every time you go in to game stop to pick up a pre order and you get a free guide book or figurine or some other collectable. Now you either don't get anything at all, due to more premium editions of the games, or get something that's worth less than gum stuck on the bottom of your shoe. 😔
