I"d let the game to get away with the 2 dimensional characters. The devs actually somehow managed to pick up on the very similar atmosphere of the conversation where the 17 yrs. ago game left it. But I can't digest the not very cool base interiors, always the same picture, not feeling you are Somewhere Else. Being in a Different part of the Story. Small detail, big impact :( And what totally disapointed me was to hear the missions are repetetive. World of of Aqua underwater combat was anything but, if I remember correctly.

yea, it is just boring. I lost interest after some hours because there is practically no story and even all the characters feel disconnected. The only thing interesting is the combat, but that feels boring too, because the AI seems not be able to do anything but looking at you. So there is no real other engagement than shooting into the front of them - Even the synchro sounds not motivated. Graphics really look like a filter and everything is too bright. Even the first Aquanox games had aim assist (lead pip).. You always have all guns with you and you cannot sell any. Must mean, that in the end you have to switch 10+ times to cycle from one to the other liked weapon.. Everything on the game just feels unfinished and kind of "rushed" out, which also makes no sense, as the devs wrote in late 2018 that the game was near completion and only fine-tuning would be done. I clearly cannot see why it was held back for another 2 years. Seems to me the "lowest effort possible" made to not let people backing the kickstarter believe / have arguments to be a scam... There was clearly no "love" put in it (and if, i cannot tell what it is (maybe hidden code)) - Feels like grabbing into fans pockets just for the name of the game

The dialog sections "gave you a flashback to RPGs". What is that supposed to mean? Playing this game reminds you of a time you played another video game? The broader discussion of the dialog and story's failings was good but this line didn't really convey anything meaningful to me. Does the choice system work? Does it make you feel in control or is it shallow and transparent? Instead the only comment was that this mechanic appears in another genre of video games. So what?

Måned siden
WillCBlogs
WillCBlogs

“The freedom gave me flashbacks to RPGs, which was unexpected.” I legit say what I meant in the last three words of that sentence. To answer your follow-up on the choice system, dialogue options doesn’t matter as it’s shallow and predetermined much like that story. Hopefully, that helps ya bud.

Ok, here the points: 1. Where is the Athmosphere? - The Characters are unauthentic and dead. The sentences are flat. You can hear that the synchronizing people who talk there have no clue about the story and whats going on. - Where is the darkness, where is the rough heavy metal music? - Where are all the animated Areas in the ships and Cities, they managed to do that 25 Years before in schleichfahrt !! It was so fun moving around, searching for people to talk to. Not even the sidemission-guys speak, theres only text. -Where is the deepness in the story? Where are the details to the life down there? - Where are all the interesting and fantastic animated characters? - What are this lampignions and fancy lights everywhere? Its meant to be dark, not a lsd trip 2. What the heck is nanoplankton? I find the idea with the pressure better, which caused that you couldnt go too high. Why should jellyfish and sharks that are not quite as big as the sub attack you?? 3. Its everything the same. The areas look quite similar. 5. The missions... Seriously? Like, "Yeah that will do, just finish, we have to release the game." 4. The looting system: There are parts and stuff in old shipwrecks and in the water flowing you can pick up. There is no animation of an hydraulic arm or something to pick this too fancy looking stuff up. Thats the details the games need!! This is 2020! and this is not a Mobile game! Also the Shield and health kits, like one click and youre okay again. THATS NOT REALISTIC AND THIS GAME IS MEANT TO BE REALISTIC in aquanox they put on a repairing robot you could level to repair the ship. 5. The Ammuntion and Crafting system: Too much. It just makes no fun and takes time. But this is a matter of taste maybe. Also when you are finished with preparing your submarine, it goes back down in the water without any animation, or water moving... - there is not even an animation for a machine that changes parts of the ship or anything. This game is just not finished yet. 6. The story. I am not finished yet, but this is everything than satisfying. I dont loose hope! It cannot be that we wait this long and then get this. Please Norbert Varga, I know it was/ is a lot of effort, but in the end the result is what counts. Listen to the fans and dont create something arrogant "This is what people like" crap. This is like a cheap movie that tries to copy succsessful parts from other movies but fails. Like ea stuff. It kind of makes me sad and angry, the Games before had so much to give.

I encourage anyone stumbling into this comment section to check out Aquanox 1 and 2 on Steam. Both games from the early 2000's aged pretty well, are EXTREMELY CHEAP and are a hell of fun to play when you have an afternoon to kill, since the stories ain't super long. Anyone who likes a nice Sci-Fi Story with great worldbuilding will feel right at home.

@Jason Yesmarc I remember playing a pirated version with crappy Russian subtitles and german audio. I started with Aquanox 2 and was enamoured with it. I remember all characters, though not by names. Animal in the trash compartment, Angelina (MC's love interest with nice voice), the first mate Nat, another girl who went all yandere about MC and died in the end, the funny guy Stoney who always got in trouble. And the captain Amitab. It was majestic for me. And the Harvester itself was and still is my dream ship. I want to ride that shit.

@Realag666 I was working on a game similar to AquaNox 1, but when I saw Deep Descent's announcement, I decided it would be better if I cut my game and work on the other active projects I had at the time, because Deep Descent seemed to be doing the same things I had in mind. I agree that it's really strange that so little science fiction and games use this setting. I will say, as someone who tried making an underwater science fiction story before: There is very little information available compared to deep space. Space-oriented science fiction has more attention and funding, and space is the first thing people think of when they hear the genre "science fiction". When I was doing research for worldbuilding for my underwater story, I was surprised how few resources there were. I actually found myself having to organize think-tanks with friends. We worked through the logic and math behind different ideas in a competition to see what ideas and techniques would emerge from an underwater civilization, and how that would affect culture and future technologies. Space science fiction has decades of references and books and philosophy and precedent. If you are attempting the same for underwater, you find yourself being a leading forerunner in the genre a lot because nobody has bothered to before.

@Jason Yesmarc No problem, I just find it fascinating that this kind of story or setting hasn't been done more often yet. With talks about clima change popping into discussions every so often, I wonder why there is just Aquanox with the premise that humanity fled into the ocean. Major underwater cities named after their geographic location, people speaking in sailor slang, just the right ammount of Sci-Fi mixed with mysticism, prophecies n stuff. The underwater world is similar to space but so much more claustrophobic with you literally sitting in your cockpit and the energy packed techno-soundtracks of the 2000's are just a joy to listen to and bring me right back into the mood to blow up some more ships I just want more of that stuff and this new game sadly does not give me much of that :(

@Iconoclast you made a bad analogy, on passing glance it has similarities to descent or yeah you could say eh its a 3 axis shooter in water. But your right dude if he feels it looks similar good on you to call him out and tell him that all movies to you are similar. Neither of you are wrong from your perspectives. This review reminds him of an older game, and star wars reminds you of gone with the wind. I haven't played this game but just looking at it and hearing when he describes closed in environments my brain by its self thought of descent. Your movie analogy just seems a bit of a reach to me. The doom / fps is a bit closer but in doom you werent free on the Y axis i believe... If you were to make an actual match in similarity then you would just be corroborating his feeling of sameness.

@Iconoclast I never said it was ripping it off, jeezus you kids are testy about a simple comment. Honestly you also look like you need to work on your reading comprehension. As Kevin said, I didn't say it was a ripoff or inferior just that it looks like the same play style as the was the first impression I got from the Escapists game footage and I was surprised that they didn't point out that comparison. Your childish temper tantrum has been now noted. You are free to move on little one.

@Kevin G I have all Descent titles on GOG, you obnoxious waffle. It’s just these are thematically different titles, with emphasis on different things. To assume that the game is a rip-off (or trying to be another game, whatever wording you prefer) just because games have the same three axis freedom of movement combat is moronic. It’s like calling every FPS Doom clone today.

Måned siden

It does make more sense to do it this way, though. If their take on the first game is considered stale or lackluster then they can take the critique and move forward, and the original games are basically still the main canon of the story. If they attempted to finish Halfman's work on the story and failed, then we would have the same issue we see with the new Star Wars movies, where a sequel could risk tarnishing the previous games by putting the poor ending in the player's mind every time they come back to AquaNox 1 or 2.

Måned siden
Jason Yesmarc
Jason Yesmarc

It's a reboot of AquaNox 1. The writer to the franchise sadly passed away and left too many major cliffhangers unresolved so THQ Nordic didn't want to attempt to reach to the original writer's skill level. Instead, they correctly decided it would be way less risky to try their own version of AquaNox 1.
