VALVes' design principles are almost totally unique in this Industry, even though those principles blow everybody away without even a shred of contest in terms of making a legitimately good game that isn't rude to you and respects you, while still telling the story it is trying to tell. every little thing in Half Life is done just about right. those small details with anything you might touch on, is what makes it exactly so great. some of those details are not even inside of the Gameplay itself. and what's even more remarkable is that the 3rd party projects that they bought and sold through their name, STILL held to those principles.

When I first played it, I didn't hear what the guard said, so I picked up the can, jumped on top of the trashcan and then ran past the guard with him chasing me out into the courtyard where I finally lost him. Still one of the most memorable openings of all time because even though I did it "wrong" I ended up fully immersed in this world with oppresive guards hunting down the rebels.

You mention about understand that your actions have consequences and thats part of the tutorial, but those consequences are in part due to replaying the game. Finding out different methods goes beyond the tutorial. I agree with the premise, the decison to do something or not, its just not necessarily part of the tutorial.

Played this the day after it released. Took all night to download it lol. Loved it, best game I'd ever played. Stopped gaming about 10 years ago. Just got a new laptop for work. For some reason downloaded Steam and there in my games list from the past was Half Life 2. Well you got it. Downloaded it, and wow it took me back, what a blast. I was having so much fun 5 hours had gone by before I new it. Still the most amazing game. Perfection 😎👍

Didn't Doom (2016) have the same text prompts? The fact that there were fewer of them before does not negate the fact that they were present in the game. Especially when you consider that "Doom Eternal" is many times more difficult than Doom (2016). I wonder if Half-Life 2 works just as well with the gameplay as it does with Doom? Hardly, which means: "DOOM Eternal" is the most hardcore shooter from the point of view of gameplay, and there are very few of them.

Definitely preferred the original HL to HL2. The underground environment in HL felt much more in tune with the limitations of the technology, beginning with the tram ride and continuing thereafter by stitching maps together to feel like a contiguous environment. I recall my very first impression of HL2 being disappointment due to the opening on the train not replicating a similar feeling of scale and overall geography like HL's opening did. By the end of HL2, the sense of time and distance travelled is disjointed because it plays more like a patchwork of set pieces. In that sense it's very movie-like -- it's driven by spectacle, but it also feels like those sequences are occupying a hollywood soundstage or backlot rather than a real environment. There's also the context in which they were released. HL felt like a revelation compared to the likes of Jedi Knight, Quake2, and Unreal that came before, whereas HL2 had the misfortune of following Far Cry. By the time HL2 had come out I had already experienced non-linear outdoor environments, drivable cars and boats, rigid-body physics, DX8/9 materials, stealth mechanics, etc. Far Cry's gameplay made traditional linear FPS level design feel old, which resulted in HL2 feeling almost like a genre throwback by the time it came out.

This is just the "figure it out for yourself" mentality, it rewards far more satisfaction than following instructions. Growing up on Atari, SNES, and Sega Genesis, I honestly can't remember any games that showed on-screen tutorials, it was all about figuring out the controls organically, like you were adjusting to living in a new body with every new game. If we wanted to know what the buttons did, we had to go to the main menu, select options and look for that shit!!

Don't get me wrong, the games I'm referring to are still great, but these games are just so immersive and enjoyable. To think they're as old as they are, it's fucking impressive. I didn't have a good enough computer at the time so my first experience with Half Life 2 was the Orange Box on Xbox 360. I absolutely couldn't understand the Combine voice through my TV's speakers so I never heard the line. I was taking my time and looking at the walls and bench for any hidden things so I didn't see the can being knocked over either. I must have ended up with the waiting too long option because the guard came after me to hit me. With no other obvious solution, I ended up having to bait him into running after me again, looping around the room, and then into the gate opening.

16 years ago, Half Life 2 was released, and still holds up, despite some muddy textures and blurry skyboxes. I mean... they've always been a company built on observing the market and making forward-looking decisions and shrewd acquisitions. The reason why Gabe started Valve in the first place was because he noticed the pervasive presence of Doom on Windows machines, not because of some burning desire to create Half-Life. Their first game came when they acquired the most popular Quake mod at the time, Team Fortress, hiring Robin Walker along with. Most popular Half-Life mods? Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat. Hired and acquired by Valve. Most popular Warcraft3 mod? Dota. Hired Icefrog and recreated it with Dota2. They would have acquired Minecraft and hired Notch back in 2010, he just happened to turn them down.

Måned siden
Zephyr Kat
Zephyr Kat

It's thankfully less depressing than that. At Valve, there are (or were) only two people in positions of power: Gabe Newell and Robin Walker. Everyone else could basically do whatever they wanted. It was an attempt at controlled chaos, harmless anarchy, and being your own boss. Your desks, sometimes literally, had wheels, and you could change projects at will. The idea was that if you could work on whatever you wanted, everyone would be happy. This backfired HARD, and with employees under no obligation to do anything, and with Steam Sales taking in the money for no effort, no one got anything done. Left4Dead3 got cancelled because the team split in two over a disagreement, and neither side bothered to finish their vision of it. Half Life 3 went through three editions, none of them even close to finished. Steam Box and Steam Controller were all abandoned immediately after launch. Half Life Alyx only released because Valve reorganized the company and installed actual bosses and project managers

@Itch-HeSay Seriously. It's like people are incapable of the virtually effortless consideration of how more often CoD, and even Fortnite despite how new it still is, has been cloned or otherwise generally emulated into easily digestible, lowest common denominator messes of meh vs Half-life.

Måned siden
Itch-HeSay
Itch-HeSay

Anyone bringing up, "what about x?", I'm not saying that there are no other games that follow in half life's footsteps, but the industry still relies too much on conventional methods from other mediums to tell their stories. There's even games that innovate with immersion in different ways than half life, but it would be nice to see more games take notes from half life, since it put down a good blueprint on how to do video game storytelling.

Back in '98, I somehow missed "Half-Life", but in fairness, that was a busy year for incredible games. In '04, I missed the second game! I had taken a break from gaming and was barely catching up. In '08, however, I got the Orange Box and with it, "Half-Life 2". I got it after pirating it and feeling bad since there was no reason to, but I was slowly getting back into PC gaming. This opening and Ravenholm (aka Gravity Gun playground). Both are fantastic at using the environment to both set the tone—Ravenholm has terrific and terrifying sound design—and subtly telling you the basics of its physics. It's a phenomenal game and that intro is iconic for so many, many reasons. Valve kinda overdid holding the player's hand in "Portal 2" with so much signage, though. Racking my brains a little trying to think of elegant design and player training, I might offer "Journey" and for a more complex game the entire hospital sequence from "MGSV" (an incredibly streamlined experience compared to the bajillion codec calls from previous games). I finally get to see a video from this series (not wanting to spoil myself any bits from games I haven't played).
